An Open Mind
Ask two people a question about any horse-related topic—health, training, tack, theory, practice, etc—and you will get three answers. And they are all probably right and all probably wrong at the same time.
Training horses is a little like crawling on your hands and knees with a blindfold that has holes in it across the country. You will eventually get there but it's going to be one heck of a journey and you're going to miss some things for sure. Each horse is unique, each rider is unique and together they are their own set of unique joys and sorrows.
The question you have to ask yourself on a regular basis is, is what I’m doing now or what goals I have planned right for my horse and I? What do I do if they are not? What do I do when they are? It's a set of tough questions because you have to look outside of your heart and circumstances for yourself and your horse.
The horse tries to tell us in various ways what's working and what's not. Sometimes we have to get bucked off and land on our pride to think that maybe something isn't working so well.
So we are 6 months into the year and headed into summer. Where are you with your goals you set for you and your horse? Have you attended those clinics you were going to go to? Did you make it to your planned shows? Have you analyzed the results of your shows and put together an exercise plan for you and your horse to improve things?
Have you found more than just one way to have some fun with your horse where you two get to just be silly and enjoy yourselves? Did you even have that on your list of goals? Have you been derailed by some injury to you or your horse and you need to re-do your goals?
If you're struggling with creating goals or reaching the goals you have, feel free to reach out to me and we can spend a short session putting them together. Believe it or not, for some disciplines the end of the competition year is Sept 30 so you only have a few short months to get to where you want to be before a new competition year starts. It's easier to get where you're going if you have a plan!
